Chemical Formula :
CaCO3 - calcium carbonate.
Corals are the product of tiny living beings which setteled in enormous colonies in the depths of warm seas, long before our time.
The polyps, sorounded by a fleshy skin, excrete a carbonic substance from which the Corals grow like trees and branches. This can attain a height of 40cm.
At the forks, they are somewhat thicker. It is from these parts that the precious raw material for jewellery items, large beads or carvings is obtained.
Hardness :
3.5 - much softer then ant other jem stone material.
Color :
The color of the coral can be white, blue, pink, red or black.
Locality :
Corals live at depths of 3 and 300 meters in the water around Japan, Taiwan, and in the Malaysian Archipelago, in the Red Sea, in the Bay of Biscay and around the Canary Islands, as well as in north - east Australia and the Midway Islands. in the Mediterranean, there are Coral banks in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the coast of Sardinia, off Tunisia and Algeria, former Yugoslavia and Turkey.
Origin :
As to the origin of the name, the etymologists are not of one opinion. Some say that it comes from the greek "korallion", which denotes the hard calcareous skeleton of the coral animals, or from "kura - halos", for "mermaid", as the fine branches of the Coral sometimes look like small figures.
